When Derbyshire Caravanning enthusiast Sue Coleman saw an advert in her local evening paper for a competition from a local company seeking new idea’s and inventions to make Camping & Caravanning easier, she would never had dreamt that her entry would not only win her a £500 cash prize, but the product has now made it onto the shelves of Caravan & Camping Accessory Shops throughout the UK.

Sue’s eureka moment came when she noticed how hard it was for her husband Steve to pull their Awning Pegs from the ground especially on hard standing pitches.

Back Problems

“Steve has always suffered back problems” Sue said, “and I could tell he was struggling more and more removing the Awning Pegs from the ground. In honesty it was spoiling our short breaks. I got to thinking that there must be an easier way for him to remove the pegs without having to kneel down in, sometimes, damp grass”

Sue’s idea was simple yet proved to be very effective… an oversized, super-strength Peg Puller!

So she entered the competition set by Derbyshire based Ultimate Lifestyle Solutions and was more than a little surprised when she received a call from Marketing Director Albert Marrocco to ask if they could manufacture a prototype of the Peg Puller.

“I couldn’t believe it” Sue said “I got a call from Ultimate telling me I was in the final 3 for the best idea. I thought it was a wind-up at first as it’s not everyday you get a phone call asking if your idea can be tested.”

Ultimate then went about manufacturing the prototype Peg Puller and invited Sue & Steve along to their Head Office to check out the result of their idea. “It was really strange” said Steve “to see what had only been an idea a few weeks previously turned into a real product”

After test-marketing the Peg Puller, Ultimate saw no option than to offer Sue the prize.

Amazing Response

“The feedback from our market research was amazing” said Marrocco “everyone we asked to test the product wanted to buy one!.. that’s the first time in my knowledge that a product we have tested has received such a positive response. It was pretty clear we had a winner and decided to award the £500 prize to Sue & Steve and offer to market the product”

Super Strength Steel

The product was branded the “Ultimate Peg Puller XL” and is manufactured using welded high-tensile steel rather than metal attached to plastic which can easily break. When Sue & Steve were taken over to Ultimate’s manufacturing plant in nearby Ripley, Derbyshire they were even more surprised to see a rather strange test rig.

“The factory manager had set up a Fork Lift with the Peg Puller and attached it to the back of an Astra Van. We couldn’t believe it when they then proceeded to lift the Van off its wheels!” said Sue

Sue and Steve will now receive a royalty payment from Ultimate for every Peg Puller sold and are planning to donate some of the payment to charity.
